Since I have nothing against the tree, and because there is no literal translation that does not evoke the tree ,and I am using it as a metaphor for a person or situation of “Bad negative energy” which “strangles and kills” its host, I will use “matapalo” in the translation below. Another meaning of Mata-palo is – “killstick” or “killdick”. Strangler fig Killmuse Matapalo, Killmuse Get out of here Matapalo, Killmuse What I want to do is live With a twisted posture And an aura of depression The Matapalo is born To bother you Silently Like a serpent It wraps itself around you And slowly begins to aphixiate Matapalo, Killmuse Get out of here Matapalo, Killmuse What I want to do is live Gaining nutrients Thru your vitality Taking out the essence Of your creativity It grows and grows And becomes stronger leaving you weak And impotent Matapalo, Killmuse Get out of here Matapalo, Killmuse What I want to do is live When you least expect it It is too late It is too difficult To breathe And you cant run You cant scream Like a bad dream Where you cant even speak Cut it with your faith And take out its roots Which are inside of you Get rid of the bad Matapalo, Killjoy, Matapalo, Killjoy

A heart that hasn’t been broken Never will comprehend The value of just a drop Of happiness From Spring to the Winter Flowers open and die Leaving behind a promise That they’ll return again In days of pure darkness In the days without sun I carry a seed inside That offers all warmth and light And I keep singing Cause the voice is emotion It is air in vibration Energy in transformation That goes directly to the heart And this life it is a blessing That is made for teaching And when we die It is only to be reborn If they crush your heart And refuse your love Give thanks for giving you life To the one who has hurt you Because you have the seed The seed of love inside And when you least expect it It will flower again with more beauty than before I sing to my mother Who has always been here And I sing to my father Who I never knew Because one fine winter day There was a moment of love And a seed that escaped Is here today to offer its flower A flower of melody To alleviate melancholy To remind you that to cry Is the first step upon the path To catch a drop of happiness Drop of happiness

The Well Spring Even though I have stopped waiting for you I will sing This love which is deviating is just like a river split into distributaries, that never forgets from where its waters flow It is a well spring Pure and natural Which we share in our soul Even though time is fleeting Something that I know Is that you and I without speaking Will have a dialogue in the clouds of our dreams Which will shine deep inside of our souls In the well spring Something pure and natural Will live inside of our souls Despite all our differences I still have faith That giving without ambivilence Would be the confluence of our destinies without reproach, and the embrace of the pure in our souls To that well spring Pure and natural That lives inside of our souls If I see u one day on the street I would invite u To sit and talk awhile Id treat u to café And I would hear That voice which is a piece of my soul That makes me vibrate Like a bell And is a piece of my soul Time moves on and on And you Ill always love You will always live In a piece of my soul And I also know That you will always have me In a piece of your soul That well spring Pure and natural Will live on in our souls

Elephant in Hotel – Inspired by photo in National Geographic of Elephant entering hotel in Zambia From Zambia Comes this story Of an elephant and his Great memory Guided by ancestors On a temporal route Soon you will see just where he Came to stop When the dirty river dried into sand He followed his destiny Looking for mangos To the Luangwa Valley Where the year before They put a hotel Around his kitchen table Enter elephant The porter said Thinking he belonged To a an esteemed client A woman at the bar Dropped her cocktail When she saw the great trunk Enter the hotel Thru the open doors The beast entered At the extreme surprise of all who saw Direct to the patio he went in hunger To the tree of his sustenance And there he stayed He stayed quite a while Eating mangoes And contented

about

"Jose Conde" - the album- is a world music stretch from Conde's acclaimed and award winning work with Ola Fresca (2008 Best Latin Record -Independent Music Awards - (R)Evolucion -Mr Bongo UK). The songs are clothed in electric and organic, funky world beats inspired by nature, love, rhythm and the sounds of words. Trading the Cuban tres for a vintage Gretsch guitar, Conde composed and produced this record in his Brooklyn home studio. Peppered with diverse influences and colors from South Africa to Brazil to Peru etc., and a humor and rhythmic phrasing undeniably and soulfully Cuban, yet uniquely Conde, the music is delivered with booty shaking grooves by an international group of acclaimed special guests and Conde who in addition to singing, recorded multiple instruments.

Jose Conde glides the line between Latin heritage and American storyteller traditions sliding from a booty shaking groove in poetic universal themes of nature’s beauty to personal expressions of romantic longing and loss. His new song based record is peppered with influences from Africa to Peru, from Cuba to New Orleans with most songs in Spanish but also in Portugese, and English. Conde may be compared to Caetano Veloso, Manu Chao or Jack Johnson, but he has a unique and intriguing voice of his own as has been noted by respected reviewers (see quotes) . Conde was the Winner of the 2008 BEST LATIN RECORD in the Indy Music awards and received rave reviews for the unveiling of his new band at Central Park Summer stage in NY in June (all About Jazz) The new work brings Conde full circle to his more pop and rock side and also evolves from his critically acclaimed work with the more Cuba centric band Ola Fresca. In 2 albums with that group, AY! Que Rico (PiPiKi/Universal), and (R)Evolucion (Mr Bongo UK - IMA 2008 Best Latin Album winner), as well as with the Baby Loves Salsa children's album (Rope a Dope/Sony), Conde delved in and deviated from Cuban rhythms, juxtaposing and fusing styles and playing with language and metaphor to achieve a unique signature sound. Conde's many tours, performances, and multiple licenses for Putumayo and Rough Guide world music compilations, have garnered him praise for what the Boston Globe calls a "singer-songwriter's trademark whimsy that stretches across multiple styles and is utterly swinging. "With heavy emphasis on rhythm and atmospheric world groove mutations as a backdrop for Conde's sweet honey vocals and poetic stories, the "nu Latin Groove band includes world beat drummer Gintas Janusonis, Brazilian multi percussionist Ze Mauricio, Cuban conga master Roman Diaz , Cuban groove bassist Jorge Bringas, guitarist Rafael Gomez, and Jose Conde on voice, guitar, and keys. Conde has a new solo album is in the works he is co producing with drummer Gintas Janusonis with a release expected in the winter of 2010. In the last couple years Conde has performed in notable venues such as Chicago World Music Fest, Montreal Jazz Festival, NY Central Park Summerstage, Bocafest in Veracruz Mexico, Green Apple Festival Miami, Santa Monica Twilight Dance Series, Kennedy Center DC, NY Global Rhythm Festival, New Orleans Voodoo Festival, and was also musical director, songwriter and singer for Baby Loves Salsa on Rope a Dope Records/Sony. In two critically acclaimed albums, Ay! Que Rico- 2004 (PiPiKi/Universal) and the award winning, (R)Evolucion (Mr. Bongo Records UK)- 2007, Conde traversed Puerto Rican bomba to Haitian compas, Cuban son to New Orleans swamp "funk creating a sound which has been hailed the world over as a "brilliant and thrilling" (Billboard) "smorgasbord of sounds that keeps listeners in a diasporic daze" (Trace). Five Jose Conde songs from both his Ay! Que Rico and (R)Evolucion albums have been featured in international compilations on Putumayo and Rough Guide Records. Conde's recent song and video, Respondele a Obama, which to date has 200,000+ views on Youtube, became an anthem of the US 2008 presidential campaign.

Like an elephant walking through the front doors of a tourist hotel to eat from his favorite mango tree, described beautifully in his song "Elefante en Hotel," Jose Conde is a phenomenon in his own right. Like the elefante in the living room (or hotel lobby, as the case may be), Conde arrives with a poignant and graceful power that cannot be ignored.
